Team building in Riyadh

Team building in Riyadh

In 1902 it was a walled town of mud brick

Riyadh is the city that changes fastest of any we work in. A route built here gets rebuilt often: districts open, others close for works, and the shortcut that worked last season has a hoarding across it now. It is the reason we go and walk it again before every event rather than reusing a map.

What we propose isn’t in the glass part of the city. It is around Qasr al-Hukm and the Al Masmak fort, where the walled town used to be, and in Souq al-Zal just behind it, where the trade still happens the way it always did.

Worth knowing

November to March. From May to September the middle of the day is unusable for anything outdoors, and the useful hours shrink to the early morning and the evening.

The heat here is dry, not humid like the coast, and it behaves differently: you dehydrate without noticing. The other way round in winter, when a January evening outdoors genuinely needs a jacket.

Ramadan shifts everyone’s hours and changes the rules about eating and drinking in public. It moves by about eleven days a year, so it is worth checking against your date early.

Things people don’t always know

The name means gardens. Riyadh is the plural of rawdah, the patch of low ground where water collects after rain and things grow. The city began as a cluster of them around an oasis.

Al Masmak is where the modern state starts. In January 1902 Abdulaziz Ibn Saud took the fort with a small party, and that raid is the beginning of the story that ends with the kingdom. A spearhead is still lodged in the main door.

The original capital is twenty minutes away. At-Turaif, the mudbrick quarter of Diriyah, was the seat of the first Saudi state and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is a different kind of walk from the city centre: quieter, and built all of one material.

What we bring to Riyadh

Here we propose the Urban Game above all, around the old centre and the souk. If you already have something in mind we adapt it to the place and to your logistics; if you haven’t, we choose it together, looking at who the participants are, how many there are and how much time you have. Let’s talk about your next team building

You don’t need to have picked a format yet. Tell us what you want your team to take home, how many of you there are and where you’ll be, and we’ll do the rest: within 24 hours you get a considered proposal for your case, with the formats that hold up against your numbers, and what each one leaves the team the day after.
