National Day is in the same window

The second of December, and the week around it, is when companies look for something that has the country in it. That is ten days before the dates most groups then want for the year-end event, in the same venues, with the same suppliers.

In practice it means two things. The good dates go earlier here than in a market without that overlap. And a company that does both ends up running two events a fortnight apart, which is worth planning as one conversation rather than two.

The evening is built around the table, not the bar

Alcohol is not served in Saudi Arabia. An end-of-year evening here is built around the food, the setting and what happens between courses, and the activities that suit it are the ones that give people something to do together rather than something to drink.

It is a different plan from the one that works in Dubai, not a smaller one. The cooking formats end with everyone at a table in front of something they made. The Corporate Song ends with three hundred people who have just sung together. Escape Box Save Santa fits between courses and ends with everybody in the same photograph.

The group arrives from three cities

Riyadh, Jeddah and the Eastern Province. A year-end event is often the one occasion in the twelve months when people who work together every day are in the same room for the first time, and that changes what the evening should do: an activity that assumes the group knows each other will leave half of it out.

And the one practical warning

December fills up in September. If you think about it in November the good dates have gone — the venues, the trainers and the equipment all at once. It is the same warning we give everywhere, and here the National Day overlap makes it start a fortnight earlier.
